Morocco's original inhabitants were the Berbers, followed by the
Carthaginians, the Romans and the Arabs in 683 who introduced Islam.
During the 11th and 12th Centuries, a Berber Kingdom ruled all of northwestern
Africa and most of Spain. During the 19th Century, parts of
Morocco came under Spanish rule. France controlled the rest of
Morocco through the 20th Century. From 1911 to 1933, tribal
uprisings caused problems in solidifying French domination. On
March 2, 1956, Morocco became independent and Tangier an
international seaport. On April 14, 1976, Morocco annexed over
70,000 sq. miles of phosphate rich land in what was know as
Spanish Sahara. The Polisario independence movement claimed the
land for themselves, and with the help of the Algerians launched
attacks against Moroccan troops. The war continues to today,
with Morocco controlling most of the major urban areas and
communication, while the guerrillas move freely in the desert.
